[Camping Gear] Why I Switched from a Naturehike Air Tent to the Snowline Saturn 2-Room DX

A review of how I sold off my heavy, bulky Naturehike 12X air tent and brought in the Snowline Saturn 2-Room DX White tunnel tent for my family of four.

Direct Answer & TL;DR

I switched. The Naturehike 12X air tent was just too massive and heavy. I moved on to a traditional pole-type tunnel tent: the Snowline Saturn 2-Room DX. Of course, thinking a massive 24.5kg (54 lbs) pole tent would be drastically lighter than an air tent was my own perfect miscalculation.

Giving Up on the Massive Air Tent

Pitching the Naturehike 12X was undeniably easy. Connect the pump, blow in the air, and you’re done. But every time I had to shove it into my car trunk, I sighed. The bulk was one thing, but wrestling with its nearly 30kg (66 lbs) weight entirely by myself was no joke.

I finally decided to sell it. And so began the hunt for a new living-shell (two-room) tent for my family of four.

7 Conditions for the New Tent

My criteria were crystal clear:

  1. Smaller packed volume than the air tent
  2. Lighter than the air tent
  3. Relatively easy to pitch
  4. Comfortable enough for a family of four
  5. Not ridiculously expensive
  6. Needs a spacious living area (vestibule)
  7. Must comfortably fit our existing 200x260cm air mattress inside the inner tent

At first, I had my eyes on the Kovea Ghost Phantom. But the pole version I wanted had been discontinued for a while. Instead, I heard they released a new air tent called the ‘Ghost Phantom Air’. I was trying to escape the weight of an air tent; buying another one wasn’t an option.

Kovea Ghost Phantom Air Price Kovea Ghost Phantom Air. The moment I saw the 1,690,000 KRW (approx. $1,250 USD) price tag, I quietly closed the browser tab.

My second candidate was the Minimal Works Albergue tunnel tent. Luckily, the Tropical color was on a massive 60% clearance sale (552,000 KRW / ~$400 USD). I debated endlessly between this and the Kovea Nest W (399,000 KRW). What drew me to the Albergue was its inner tent size—about 300 x 240 x 190(h)cm. It was roomy enough to fit our massive 200x260cm air mattress with plenty of space left over for luggage. If you cram a mattress in and leave no room to step, you’re going to have a bad time. Checking the inner tent’s actual dimensions and mattress compatibility is the key to preventing double investments.

Just as my finger hovered over the checkout button, I heard the news: Snowline was throwing a massive discount event. It was the May Family Happy Day super sale. I immediately drove to the Snowline Pyeongtaek-Anseong direct store that weekend.

Snowline Saturn 2-Room DX White. A staggering 290,000 KRW (approx. $210 USD). I couldn’t resist. A massive living room, that white tent aesthetic, and a completely absurd price tag. The Saturn 2-Room DX’s inner tent was also an impressive 310 x 255cm, boasting enough specs to swallow our family’s large air mattress whole with room to spare. I paid on the spot and loaded it into my car.

Specs Comparison: The 4 Tunnel Tents I Agonized Over

Since I already meticulously researched them, I organized them into a table. If you’re looking for a tunnel-style living-shell tent in Korea, these are the staple models you’ll inevitably consider.

[!TIP] What to Watch Out For When Choosing a Two-Room Tent Even if the capacity says ‘4-person’, you must check the actual dimensions of the inner tent. Verifying whether your specific air mattress (like my 200x260cm) will fit against the floor dimensions is the best way to prevent wasting money on a tent that doesn’t fit your gear.

The Twist While Searching for a “Light” Tent

When I brought the tent home and started unloading it from my car, my first thought was exactly this: “Wow, this is really big. And… why is it so heavy?”

I explicitly bought a pole tent to escape the murderous weight of an air tent. Yet, the Snowline Saturn 2-Room DX weighed in at a hefty 24.5kg (54 lbs). Up until then, I honestly thought all pole tents were in the 10kg range. I saw the Albergue was 16kg and assumed they were all like that.

In the end, I failed to dramatically reduce my pack weight. However, the overwhelming value of a $210 price tag, the massive 6.8m length of the living space, and the anticipation of how beautiful that crisp white tent will look at the campsite made me forgive everything.

I set out looking for a light tent, and ended up buying a massive 24.5kg beast. Honestly, just thinking about whether I can handle these heavy metal poles by myself on the next trip already makes my back ache. Still, the packed volume is definitely smaller than the air tent, and the living area is vastly larger. For a family of four, I seriously doubt there’s a better budget-friendly model out there.

Most importantly, it’s our family’s first white tent. I’m already counting down the days to our next camping trip, caught half between worry over the actual pitching process and pure excitement for the new memories (and inevitable trial-and-error) that await us.
