TL;DR
- iPhone 13 Pro: no serious issues, but battery and responsiveness started declining
- Compared the 17 / Air / Pro / Pro Max after contract ended → went with 17 Pro
- 17 dropped for 8GB RAM, Air dropped for eSIM-only, Pro Max dropped for size
- After switching: glad I did
Three-plus years with the iPhone 13 Pro. No real complaints. Plenty for daily use.
Then the battery started acting up. Full charge in the morning, under 20% by evening. Nothing in my usage had changed. Apps felt slightly slower, too — a brief hesitation when opening the camera or switching to Messages.
Contract ended.
“Time to switch.”
Which Model?
I narrowed it down to the iPhone 17 lineup and compared all four models.
iPhone 17 (base) — out immediately. Reportedly 8GB RAM. Apps only get heavier over time, and 8GB could start showing its limits after a few years.
iPhone 17 Air — tempting, but not for me. Thin, light, A19 Pro chip. But it’s eSIM-only, which makes swapping physical SIMs abroad more of a hassle. Camera is also a step below the Pro.
iPhone 17 Pro Max — too big. 6.9 inches doesn’t sit comfortably in one hand, and the price jumps accordingly.
That left the 17 Pro.
| iPhone 17 | iPhone 17 Air | iPhone 17 Pro | iPhone 17 Pro Max | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Display | 6.3" | 6.5" (thinnest) | 6.3" | 6.9" |
| Chip | A19 | A19 Pro | A19 Pro | A19 Pro |
| RAM | 8GB | 12GB | 12GB | 12GB |
| Storage | 256/512GB | 256/512GB/1TB | 256/512GB/1TB | 256/512GB/1TB/2TB |
| SIM | nano-SIM | eSIM only | nano-SIM + eSIM | nano-SIM + eSIM |
| Decision | ❌ 8GB RAM | ❌ eSIM only | ✅ chosen | ❌ too large |
[!NOTE] Apple doesn’t publish RAM specs officially. The 8GB figure for the base iPhone 17 is based on third-party teardowns and reports. The Pro models are widely reported at 12GB.
Silver, Orange, Deep Blue — I went with Silver.
The 17 and 17 Pro share the same 6.3" display size. The Pro is a bit heavier and carries a larger battery. Camera-wise, the Pro has main, ultrawide, and telephoto — features like ProRes and Dual Capture require Pro or above. I shoot a lot of photos and video, so staying on the Pro line made sense.
How I Bought It
Ordered directly from Apple’s website, unlocked, no carrier contract. Carriers offer discounts tied to plan commitments, but I didn’t want to change my plan — so I paid full price. Delivery came in about a week.
Storage: 256GB. Same as the 13 Pro. I manage my photo library regularly and never ran into storage issues, so no reason to go higher.
After Switching
The 13 Pro was fine. But switching to the 17 Pro made me realize just how much had gradually degraded.
- Notch → Dynamic Island: I didn’t notice how much the 13 Pro’s notch was eating into the display until it was gone.
- Battery: Still at 40%+ by evening with the same usage patterns. Feels like 2+ more hours compared to the 13 Pro.
- App responsiveness: The hesitation when opening apps — it’s gone. Camera launches instantly, multitasking feels fluid.
- Camera: Noticeably better outdoors, especially telephoto.
- Display: Easier to read in direct sunlight.
On paper, the 17 Pro doesn’t look drastically different from the 13 Pro. In use, every small thing adds up.
If your 13 Pro is still running well, there’s no rush. But if the battery is fading or things feel slow, that’s the signal. The 17 Pro isn’t cheap, but with 12GB RAM, I’m planning four more years out of it.
