Direct Answer & TL;DR

From December 4 to 10, 2024, our family traveled with another family to Nha Trang, five nights and seven days. Four adults, four kids (two in third grade, two not yet in school). Total cost: ₩6,008,652 ($4,292), about ₩3,000,000 ($2,146) per family. We split the stay between three nights at TUI BLUE downtown and two nights in a 3-bedroom pool villa at Melia Vinpearl in Cam Ranh. The hardest part wasn’t the flight — it was a 90-minute immigration line just before midnight at the airport. If you land in Nha Trang late at night, buy Fast Track ahead of time. And if you’re dreaming of pool villa swims in December, know that the water can be cold.

Why Nha Trang: Under 5 Hours by Air

We had one rule for picking a destination: the kids don’t handle long flights well, so we looked for a beach destination within about 5 hours. The other wish was a pool villa. We wanted to try one at least once, and let the kids swim as much as they liked. Korean Air’s direct Incheon–Nha Trang route fit both.

What Kind of Place Is Nha Trang

Nha Trang is a coastal city on Vietnam’s south-central coast. Tran Phu Street runs long along the shoreline, and the bay in front of it, Nha Trang Bay, has been named by Travel + Leisure as one of the world’s 29 most beautiful bays, two years running.

Nha Trang’s downtown and coastline, seen on Google Maps A city stretched long along the coastline. The airport and the Cam Ranh resort sit just off the bottom edge of this map. (Map: Google Maps)

The history runs deeper than it looks. This was once the Kauthara region of the old Champa Kingdom. Po Nagar Temple, which we visited on our fourth day, is a Cham temple with a restoration record already inscribed in 781. Vietnam took the territory in the 17th century. In more recent history, French bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin founded a Pasteur Institute here, and died in Nha Trang in 1943. In July 2025, Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan provinces were merged in an administrative reorganization. The name stayed Khanh Hoa. One thing worth knowing about the geography: Cam Ranh International Airport is about 35km south of downtown, a 30–45 minute drive. Melia Vinpearl Cam Ranh, where we stayed for the second half, is only about a 10-minute drive from the airport. That’s why we split the trip between city days and resort days.

Nha Trang Weather by Month: December Is the Tail End of the Rainy Season

December, when we went, sits at the tail end of the rainy season (September–December) and the start of the coolest stretch of the year.

Monthly averages (source: Climates to Travel)

October and November get the most rain; December already eases off. The same source names mid-January through March as the best window — the dry season, and the coolest stretch too. A high of 27°C sounds like summer, but mornings, evenings, and the water underneath are a different story. We learned that the hard way at the pool villa.

The 5-Night, 7-Day Itinerary at a Glance

We built a day-by-day spreadsheet before the trip. We mostly got around by Grab, and walked wherever it was close.

Midnight Immigration: A 90-Minute Wait

We landed at Cam Ranh Airport at 11:50pm. After a flight over 5 hours that the kids somehow survived, an immigration line was waiting for us. It was long. We waited about 90 minutes. Sleepy, humid, hot. The kids had a genuinely hard time the whole way through.

It turned out there was a Fast Track lane off to the side. Pay, and you get a separate, faster line.

ComparisonUs (standard immigration)Fast Track

ProcessStandard queuePer the seller, staff meet you at the gate and guide you to a priority line, plus help with baggage claim
Price₩0From 1,500,000 VND per person
Booking—Recommended at least 24 hours ahead

Sellers advertise a normal wait of 30–60 minutes in peak season, 2–3 hours when it’s busy. Our 90 minutes landed somewhere in that range. Even the Fast Track line seemed to be running slower than the advertised 5–10 minutes that day. When it’s crowded, Fast Track may not be as fast as advertised either. The price isn’t small — 12,000,000 VND for eight people. Even so, I’d pay it next time. That’s the conclusion of someone who stood there for 90 minutes with kids.

3 Nights Downtown: TUI BLUE and Everything Within Walking Distance

Our downtown stay was TUI BLUE Nha Trang, a 28-story hotel on Tran Phu Street along the beach, booked directly through the hotel’s website. Three nights came to ₩559,338 ($400), about ₩186,000 ($133) a night. Lotte Mart and J Spa were both within walking distance.

At J Spa, the adults got massages while the kids had a kids’ plan of their own. The experience was good. Paying the bill, though, it felt more expensive than expected.

Of everything we ate, An Thoi suited us best. The pho, and a dish with shrimp and baguette bread, were especially good. We went there for lunch on day two — and again for lunch on the last day. Dinner on the third night was at Luong Song River, a seafood restaurant. We ordered baby squid, garlic-fried razor clams, and lobster. The lobster turned out pricier than expected, with not much meat to show for it. The best thing on the table that night was the fried rice.

2 Nights at the Cam Ranh Pool Villa: A Christmas Party and Cold Water

On the afternoon of day four, we took a Grab to Melia Vinpearl in Cam Ranh. We stayed in a 3-bedroom pool villa, both families in one unit. We booked this one directly through the hotel’s website too — two nights for ₩805,151 (~$575).

The resort was in the middle of a Christmas party when we arrived. December 7th, and this beachside resort was already Christmas. The mood was great.

The pool villa had a two-story layout with a spacious living room, and that part we liked. The problem was the pool. The water was cold. We’d picked a pool villa specifically so the kids could swim freely, but the weather had turned a bit chilly, so we only got in the water briefly. Heated water would have made a real difference. The villa had a pool. The weather just wasn’t right for getting into it. Without swimming, our time at the resort got a little dull.

On our second evening at the resort, we ordered the BBQ the resort sells. Pork belly and an assortment of seafood came out. At ₩154,767 ($111), it was pricier than expected, but we enjoyed it. Even out here in Nha Trang, pork belly needed soju next to it. That one bottle of soju cost ₩14,481 ($10).

If you’re booking a pool villa in December, ask first whether the pool is heated. As the weather table above shows, Nha Trang’s average low in December is 22.6°C. When we were there, the pool water was too cold for the kids to stay in long.

Prepaid items made up 83% of the total, and the flights were the biggest chunk of that. Locally, the two families together spent about ₩1,000,000 ($714). Valet parking isn’t in this table. Five nights of lodging, combined, came to about ₩1,364,000 ($975). Split between two families, that’s under ₩700,000 (~$500) each.

If We Go Back to Nha Trang

Prices were low, and the food suited us. The pho at An Thoi did, and so did the fried rice at Luong Song River. Both families came away satisfied. The one surprise was that the pool water in December was colder than we expected. We’d go back to Nha Trang. Next time, we’ll book Fast Track along with the plane tickets.
